2016 nobel prize in physics

Its always nice when you see your own heroes are celebrated.
Phase transitions refer to abrupt changes in the properties of a material - for instance the progression from ice to water to steam as the temperature is ramped up from freezing.
Im sure this Nobel prize will be cheered in many quarters!
A topological surface is partly defined by how many holes there are.The breakthroughs of these three scientists allowed massive progress to be made in understanding and calculating the properties of many material systems. But a ball is different. The prize is normally given to someone who has made their discoveries a long time ago and has led to lots of applications.Thouless, Haldane and Kosterlitz have investigated these phase transitions and also come up with important pieces of the theory that explains why these sudden changes happen.I am especially pleased for David Thouless he is one of the gentlemen of theoretical physics, a true great!Prof Chris Phillips, of Imperial College London, says this years choice is a real scientists prize.Clip from an interview by freelance journalist Marika Griehsel at the 55th meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, Germany, June 2005.Nobel Prizes 2018, this year 12 new laureates have been awarded for achievements that have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind. To cite this section, mLA style: The Nobel Prize in Physics 2016.The work of the 2018 Nobel Laureates also included combating war crimes, as well as integrating innovation and climate with economic growth. However, I have met a few people who would sell their soul, leaving aside a granny or fortune, for the prize.Do join us if you can.Credits: Ladda Productions AB (webcasting).
